According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, about 20% of men in their 50s have an enlarged prostate, 60% of men in their 60s, and 70% of men by age 70. As the prostate gland grows, it may squeeze the urethra and this can slow or prevent the passage of urine and make it difficult to urinate. Over time, the bladder muscle may even weaken and not able to completely empty, which can lead to bladder or kidney infections. In some cases, the urine flow becomes completely blocked, which is a medical emergency. Let's talk about a natural remedy that can safeguard your prostate.
Pygeum is an herbal remedy obtained from the bark of the African cherry tree, also known as Prunus africana. Pygeum also goes by several other names, including African cherry, African plum, African prune and red stinkwood. This herbal remedy has been used in traditional medicine in the African regions to treat many medical conditions for many years. Pygeum is rich in phytochemicals such as phytosterols, pentacyclic triterpenes, and ferulic acid, which contribute to its therapeutic properties. It has been used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate it also helps with erectile dysfunction (ED), which is a common symptom of BPH.
Pygeum has been shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins in the prostate and reduces the production of leukotrienes and other 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) metabolites. Studies have suggested that inflammation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Pygeum is known for antioxidant, antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiestrogenic properties. The herb has the ability to prevent the binding of dihydrotestosterone in the prostate gland, prevent activating androgen receptors, inhibiting cellular growth factors, which can all reduce prostate gland size. Additionally, it helps improve bladder elasticity and blocks accumulation of cholesterol in the prostate due to the effects of fat-soluble components. It seems to have the ability to stop the growth of both androgen insensitive and androgen sensitive cells, inducing apoptosis, and down-regulate estrogen receptor expression in cells, which may reduce the risk for prostate cancer.
Pygeum supplements have anti-inflammatory properties that may help lower inflammation and relieve symptoms of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Pygeum also helps prevent urinary tract and bladder infections by inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the urinary tract and helps reduce pain and urination difficulty.
Pygeum benefits include the following:
- Supports Prostate health.
- Lowers inflammation and relieves inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
- Prevents UTIs and bladder infections.
- Helps improve libido for men.
To help treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, dosages of Pygeum extract can range from 25 to 200 mg/day, which is typically standardized to 14% total sterols. In general, pygeum seems safe for most people to use and is considered non-toxic. A small number of individuals may have side effects including digestive issues, gastrointestinal irritation.
