What Can SAMe Do to Your Health?

SAMe is produced from an amino acid called methionine. S-adenosyl-L-methionine, commonly known as SAMe, is a dietary supplement that has become popular. SAMe plays an integral role in creating different hormones, neurotransmitters, synthesis of proteins, fatty acids, and other critical molecules in the body. Your body naturally produces SAMe and uses it to regulate cell function. There seems to be a relationship between vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiencies and deficiencies in SAMe.  About 30% of the total SAMe in the body is found within mitochondria, which is the energy-producing engine of cells. SAMe is critical in charging mitochondrial function. SAMe is also required to manufacture all sulfur-containing compounds in the body including glutathione, a master antioxidant, and other sulfur-containing cartilage components such as chondroitin sulfate. SAMe supports mitochondria, the methylation process in the liver detoxification pathways, autophagy, and overall health.

The most well-known function of SAMe is its important role in the methylation process along with folate and B12. Methylation is adding a methyl group to another molecule. SAMe is more effective in transferring methyl groups than other methyl donors. It is the sole methyl donor involved in the proper methylation of our DNA and RNA. Therefore, it plays a big role in cellular replication and genetic expression.  B12 and folic acid are involved in methylation reactions and the manufacture of SAMe, thus a deficiency of these nutrients can lead to SAMe dysfunction. SAMe is key to proper methylation in the body. It also methylates amino acids and phospholipids and increases important neurotransmitters.

SAMe deficiency has been linked to individuals who suffer from liver stagnation and depression. SAMe prevents uncontrolled cell division, which is the main feature of cancer cells. It also inhibits the enzyme involved in cancer cell proliferation. The brain needs SAMe to make neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which are important for mental health and preventing depression. The antidepressant effects of SAMe may be more effective in men. Some researchers suggest that SAMe may work by increasing serotonin in the brain in the same way that antidepressants do. SAMe also enhances cognition by improving brain cell membrane fluidity and function. SAMe has also been shown to improve mood after childbirth and the stress associated with drug detoxification and rehabilitation because it raises brain levels of serotonin and dopamine, and improves the binding of neurotransmitters to receptor sites to improve their activities. SAMe can be used safely with SSRIs and produces a positive effect on the outcome of the treatment. SAMe positively impacts glutathione production, which may also protect the brain from oxidative damage caused by toxins or degenerative diseases.

SAMe also supports joint health. A deficiency of SAMe in the joint tissue, like a deficiency of glucosamine, can cause the loss of cartilage and cartilage degeneration, leading to pain and impaired joint mobility. SAMe offers similar benefits to relieve pain and reduce osteoarthritis without the side effects of conventional painkillers. Fibromyalgia is associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain, depression, and fatigue. In double-blind human clinical studies, SAMe has been shown to reduce fibromyalgia symptoms including pain reduction and mood improvement.

Here are some amazing health benefits of SAMe:
  • Protects the liver and supports liver detoxification pathways.
  • Relieves depression and supports mental health.
  • Enhances cognition and improves brain cell function.
  • Relieves osteoarthritis and improves joint health.
Regarding the dosage of SAMe supplementation, SAMe is usually recommended at 200 to 400 mg twice daily. Safe and effective doses range from 800-1600 mg for most conditions. SAMe rarely produces side effects other than occasional nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Those struggling with digestive issues should take SAMe with food, which is gentle on the stomach. Pregnant women should take SAMe only under medical supervision. There are no known drug interactions with SAMe based on current studies. SAMe is unstable and requires optimal storage conditions because it can quickly change color and lose potency when exposed to air and moisture. Therefore, choosing blister packs instead of bottles is a good idea.

By the way, I will be at the Metaphysical, Psychic & wellness Fair on Sept.21st at Knox Church in Parksville. I will be offering a talk on "How Can Our Belief System Affect Our Health", I will also offer intuitive readings including palm reading, tarot card reading, Vedic Astrology reading, holistic health consultations, etc. Please check my poster below for more details, everyone is welcome and let's support local events! I am looking forward to seeing you there.
