Research shows that there is a dramatic increase in the risk of both arterial and venous blood clots with age. This may relate to toxin overload, medications, vessel wall damage, decreased regular exercise, reduced mobility, etc. Atrial fibrillation is a type of irregular heartbeat that involves the two chambers of the heart beating very fast and irregularly. This affects the blood flow through the heart. People with atrial fibrillation have a higher risk of blood clots in the heart. Oral contraceptives can increase the risk of blood clots by increasing plasma fibrinogen, which helps in the formation of blood clots. Dietary choices can play a significant role in improving blood circulation and reducing the risk of blood clotting. Certain foods have blood-thinning properties that help prevent excessive clot formation.
Let’s talk about some natural remedies to reduce blood clotting and protect your heart.Bromelain: An enzyme found in pineapple that helps break down fibrin, a key component of blood clots.
Nattokinase: An enzyme derived from fermented soy, nattokinase helps increase the breakdown of blood clots.
Garlic: Contains allicin and sulfur compounds that help reduce platelet aggregation and reduce clot formation. Garlic helps prevent the accumulation of plaque in the arteries.
Ginger: Contains the chemical salicylate and gingerol, which have anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties. Gingerol prevents platelets from sticking together.
Turmeric: Contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties and helps reduce blood clot formation.
Cayenne Pepper: Contains capsaicin, which can act as a natural blood thinner and help improve blood circulation.
Cinnamon: Contains coumarin, which has anticoagulant effects.
Dong Quai, also known as “female ginseng” in TCM that helps reduce blood clotting. Dong quai contains coumarin, which is also present in cinnamon.
Foods Rich in Vitamin E: Nuts and seeds, and avocados are good sources of vitamin E, which is an anticoagulant.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, walnuts, and flaxseeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation and platelet aggregation, and lower the risk of blood clots.
Leafy Greens: including spinach and kale, contain vitamin K, which regulates clotting mechanisms.
Citrus fruits, including oranges and lemons, contain bioflavonoids that improve vascular function.
Dark Chocolate (Cacao): Contains flavonoids
Virgin olive oil: rich in antioxidants called phenols, which affect several proteins in the blood that play a role in clotting.
Grapes: Contain antioxidants that help protect the heart and blood vessels. They help prevent platelets from sticking together.
Drinking herbal teas such as green tea or ginger tea can also help support vascular function. Besides diet and nutrition, there are other ways to improve blood circulation and prevent blood clotting.
