Hello Beautiful Soul,
Have you ever walked into a room painted deep red and felt your heart start to race? Or stepped outside into a lush green forest and suddenly felt your shoulders drop three inches? That wasn't your imagination. That was color therapy at work—and your body has responded to colour since the day you were born.
Color therapy, also called chromotherapy, is one of the oldest healing modalities on the planet. From ancient Egypt (where healers used sunlit colored glass to flood the body with healing light) to the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), color has always been understood as a language the body speaks fluently. And once you learn to listen, the messages are extraordinary.
The Rainbow Inside You: What TCM Has Known for 5,000 Years
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is organized around five elemental energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element governs specific organs, emotions, seasons, and yes, colours. This isn't metaphor. TCM practitioners have used this framework for millennia to diagnose imbalances and guide healing.Let's take a tour of the rainbow and what it means for YOUR health.
GREEN — The Wood Element | Liver & Gallbladder
Green is the colour of spring, new growth, and renewal — and in TCM, it belongs to the Liver and Gallbladder. These organs are responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (life energy) throughout your body. When the Liver is stressed, you might notice irritability, tense muscles, headaches, or PMS.Spending time in nature, surrounding yourself with lush green plants, or even visualizing a brilliant emerald light moving through your body can help soothe Liver Qi stagnation and release emotional tension. Green foods — think spinach, kale, broccoli, green tea — nourish these organs from the inside out. This colour says: breathe, release, and let go.
RED — The Fire Element | Heart & Small Intestine
Red is passion, warmth, and life force. In TCM, red belongs to the Heart and Small Intestine — the seat of the Shen, or spirit. A balanced Heart means clear thinking, joyful emotions, and restful sleep. An imbalanced one? Anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, and scattered thoughts. In chromotherapy, red light is used to stimulate circulation, energize the body, and warm cold, stagnant areas. However, too much red can overstimulate. Think of it as your inner fire — you want it warm and steady, not a raging inferno. Red foods like tomatoes, beets, and red berries support cardiovascular health and help your spirit feel grounded and alive.
YELLOW — The Earth Element | Spleen & Stomach
Feeling bloated, fatigued, or mentally foggy? Your Earth element might be asking for some sunshine. In TCM, yellow and golden tones correspond to the Spleen and Stomach — the digestive powerhouse duo that transforms food into energy and nourishes every cell in your body.A well-nourished Earth element brings mental clarity, a stable mood, and strong digestion. Yellow stimulates the nervous system, activates the lymphatic system, and has been shown in research to boost serotonin production (hello, sunshine mood lift!). Add golden-hued foods like ginger, turmeric, squash, and millet to your plate, and let the warmth of yellow remind your body it is safe, nourished, and supported.
WHITE & METALLIC — The Metal Element | Lungs & Large Intestine
White, silver, and crisp metallic tones belong to the Metal element in TCM, governing the Lungs and Large Intestine. These organs are responsible for taking in the pure (breath, nourishment) and releasing what no longer serves you. Sound familiar? Metal energy is deeply connected to grief, letting go, and boundaries. When the Metal element is weak, you might experience respiratory issues, constipation, skin problems, or a persistent sadness. White light in chromotherapy is used to cleanse, purify, and create clarity. White and pale foods — cauliflower, pears, daikon radish, white mushrooms — are classic TCM foods for lung support. Breathe deeply, let go, and make space for something new.
BLUE & BLACK — The Water Element | Kidneys & Bladder
Deep blue, indigo, and black belong to the most yin element in TCM — Water, governing the Kidneys and Bladder. The Kidneys are considered the root of all vitality in Chinese medicine, storing your Jing (essence) — the deep reserve of energy you were born with. Overwork, chronic stress, and fear deplete Kidney energy rapidly.Blue is profoundly calming and cooling. In chromotherapy, it lowers blood pressure, slows heart rate, and reduces inflammation. Black and deep blue foods — black sesame, black beans, blueberries, seaweed, and dark cherries — are kidney tonics that replenish your deepest reserves. This colour whispers: rest, restore, go within.
How to Use Color Therapy Every Day
Wear your medicine. Feeling low energy? Reach for orange or red. Need to calm down before a stressful meeting? Dress in blue or green. Your wardrobe is a daily color prescription.
Eat the rainbow. This isn't just a nutrition slogan — it's ancient healing wisdom. Each color in your food delivers unique phytonutrients AND energetic medicine to the corresponding organs.
Bathe in colored light. Red light therapy, chromotherapy bath salts can shift your energy in minutes.
Visualize with intention. During meditation, breathe in the color associated with the organ or emotion you want to heal. See it glowing, vibrant, and alive inside you.
Surround yourself intentionally. The colors in your home and workspace are constantly influencing your nervous system, mood, and organ health. Choose wisely.
The Bottom Line
Your body is not just a physical machine — it is a living, breathing, vibrational field that responds to color, sound, intention, and energy. TCM recognized this thousands of years ago, and modern research is catching up fast. Whether you're drawn to the grounding warmth of yellow, the expansive peace of green, or the deep restoration of blue, your color preferences are often your body's quiet wisdom speaking up. Start paying attention. The rainbow isn't just beautiful — it's a roadmap to your healing.
What about frequencies associated with each organ? I will dive into the specific healing tones for each organ in my upcoming workshop: "Mastering the Cosmic Elixir – Breathwork". These powerful healing tone sequences are paired with breathwork and unique body postures to activate energy flow in your body; you basically speak to your organ directly. Please check more details for this workshop here, and space is limited.
