What Can Yellow Dock Do to Your Health?

Have you heard about the Yellow Dock? Yellow dock (Rumex Crispus) is a perennial plant that belongs to the buckwheat/knotweed family. The plant is native to Europe and Western Asia but has widely spread in North America where it grows almost anywhere it can. You can find yellow dock growing along roadsides, in areas with disturbed soil, and perhaps in your garden. With its long and curling leaves and strictly standing large stalks, the yellow dock can be further distinguished by its ruddy-colored seeds that arrive in the fall. Yellow Dock, in particular the taproot, has a long history of traditional use since the time of Hippocrates. It has been used to aid digestion, support liver health, and cleanse the blood.  Yellow dock has also been used to treat various bacterial infections historically.

Yellow dock is considered a bitter herb due to the presence of tannins. The bitter components of certain herbs can stimulate the increased production of saliva, digestive enzymes, and bile from the liver and enhance the absorption of nutrients. The bitter flavor also helps regulate blood sugar by decreasing sugar cravings and increasing feelings of fullness. Yellow dock also helps balance hormones by supporting the elimination of excess estrogen during the luteal and menstrual phases of women’s menstruation cycles.

Yellow dock root is particularly rich in phytochemicals glycosides that help protect and stimulate the liver and increase bile production. Yellow dock root is also high in antioxidants and rich in minerals. The antioxidants prevent free radical damage in the body. Yellow dock is rich in plant-based (non-heme) iron. This makes yellow dock an excellent herb for treating iron deficiency anemia. Yellow dock leaves are very high in vitamin C, which helps boost our immune system. Yellow dock is also a source of potassium, which helps regulate fluid in the body.

The anthraquinones in yellow dock stimulate peristalsis of the intestines, which increases bowel transit time and relieves constipation. The tannins in the yellow dock are astringent and also help manage diarrhea.  The inulin in the yellow dock is prebiotic, which promotes beneficial bacteria in the gut and enhances digestive functions.

The natural astringent properties make this herb an excellent skin toner. Its soothing and cooling action can help relieve skin inflammation and reduce facial redness. It can be applied topically to alleviate swelling, bruising, rashes, sores, fungal infections, insect bites, acne, and eczema. The healing benefit of the yellow dock for acne is very effective.
Yellow dock has been known to treat arthritis and rheumatism. It helps relieve pain related to arthritis and rheumatism due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also widely known as an effective herb for sore throat, coughs, bronchitis, and even laryngitis.

The health benefits of yellow dock include the following:

  • Balance Hormones
  • Energy support during menstruation
